Making a Basement in Storrs Mansfield, CT Warmer

These homeowners in Storrs Mansfield, CT had issues with their basement being cold and energy bills being high. For those with laundry set ups in the basement, it is extra important for the basement to be comfortable and not have to worry about freezing pipes. Not only that, but a basement that is not properly air sealed will let cold air from outside up into the home, making the heating system work harder to keep the home warm.

There was ineffective fiberglass insulation that we had to remove before starting our process, it was starting to fall apart and would only deteriorate further if left in. We sealed the rim joist with expanding foam and installed our Foamax polyiso insulation foam board onto the walls with our Foam-Tite fasteners. Foamax has flame retardant properties as well as a foil facing to reflect heat to keep it in.

Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, these homeowners will no longer have to be uncomfortable in their basement or worry about high energy bills.

Knee Wall Insulation

The floor upper level, the ceiling of the lower level and knee-wall are all cold in winter and hot from radiant roof heat in the summer. This result makes the knee-wall space not suitable for storage since it is dusty and very cold or hot. To resolve this Fogarty Home Services uses blocks of SilverGlo™ foam Insulation that is installed between ceiling joist bays. Outside the blocks, the surface of the sealing is sealed with sprayed foam or SilverGlo™ foam.

Reduce Ice Damming and Improve Energy Efficiency in Monson, MA

This homeowner called us because they were having a serious issue with ice dams. Water was leaking in, even though they had a new roof.

When our Building Science Specialist evaluated the home, he realized that the second floor of the Cape style home suffered from inadequate insulation and air was leaking in through the soffits into the kneewall spaces.

To solve this problem, we first removed all existing batt insulation and prepped for new insulation in the attic area and air sealed the can lights in the cathedral ceiling. We then installed our SuperKneeWall™ Insulation System with SilverGlo™ on the walls and between floor joists as needed. We dense packed the roof, through the soffits with blown-in TruSoft™ Cellulose, air sealed the floor with ZypFoam™ and then insulated the attic floor with TruSoft™ Cellulose.

The second floor of this home is now properly air sealed and insulated and airflow will be distributed evenly throughout the home resulting in lower energy bills and no more ice dams!

Ice Damming in Mansfield Center, CT

This homeowner was experiencing severe ice damming.  Ice damming occurs when heat from inside your attic warms the underside of your roof. This causes the snow and ice on the roof to melt. When the water hits the cold gutter and overhang, it refreezes and forms an ice dam and icicles. Ice damming causes a lot of damage to homes.  Our team went to work on this homeowner's attic.  We air sealed all the penetrations and tops of the walls with our 1-Part Expandable Polyeuranem Foam.  We blew our TruSoft Cellulose insulation to a Department of Energy recommendation of R-60, which is about 18 to 20 inches.  This attic is now properly air sealed and insulated.  The homeowner is very happy to no longer have to worry about ice dams!

Lowering Fuel Costs and Living More Comfortably in Stafford Springs, CT

This homeowner called us out Stafford Springs, CT to assess a problem they were having in their Cape Cod Style home. The problem was that they were experiencing very high fuel costs and electricity bills. Another problem was that they were uncomfortable with the temperature in their home no matter the season. It was always too cold in the winter, and never cool enough in the summer! When we arrived to the home we did a full Home Energy Evaluation to help the customer, as well as us understand why these issues were occurring. We know that most Cape Cod Style homes are inadequate insulation, this is an example of one. The attic was insulated with fiberglass insulation, which easily allows air to travel through because it is so fluffy. This wasn't keeping air from leaking into the attic, and a poorly insulated attic is the same temperature as outside. In this style attic, knee-wall spaces are a huge issue. They are dusty, and always either too hot or too cold. This is why the cost of their fuel and electricity bills were always so high.

To fix this, we need to first remove all of the old, nasty fiberglass insulation and properly dispose of the materials. We take all of the old insulation, bag it up, and rid of the materials. Once all of the old insulation is out we can start out Super Kneewall Treatment. First, we properly measure and cut our 4" SilverGlo foam board to fit. We install our SilverGlo insulation panels on the bottom of the rafters in the knee-wall spaces. Next, we have to block and seal out ceiling joist bays with one-part expanding foam foam to stop air leakage. After this, we dense pack out TruSoft cellulose insulation to stop air flow and insulate. Lastly, we need to insulate the flat part of this Cape Cod attic ceiling. We do this by blowing our TruSoft cellulose insulation. Now our treatment is complete.

Thanks to Dr Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions these homeowners can now have lower bills, and live comfortably in their homes all year round.
