Reducing Inconsistent Temperature in a Home in Charlton, MA

A homeowner called us from Charlton, MA to request a full Home Energy Evaluation. The problem they were having was inconsistent temperatures throughout their house. It would be cold in one room and hot in another. This specific style home has a sloped roof, with knee-walls in the attic that are very difficult to keep warm or cold depending on the season. This knee wall was directly above a bedroom. The lack of any insulation was making it extremely hard to cool and heat the upper level of their home, especially in the bedrooms.

We used our Super Kneewall Treatment to fix this problem. First, we use our 4" SilverGlo insulation boards to block off air from getting through the ceiling joists and bays. We sprayed our one part foam to seal the edges and made sure no air can travel through the cracks. Then, we installed our SilverGlo foam boards under the rafters up to the knee-wall and sealed with one part foam. Next, we had to dense pack the roof slopes with our TruSoft cellulose insulation to stop air flow as well as insulate this non insulated attic. Our last step was to blow our TruSoft cellulose insulation above the flat ceiling.

Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, these homeowners can now live more comfortably in their home with more consistent temperatures all year long!

Insulate Stone Basement Walls & Rim Joists in North Grosvenordale, CT

This North Grosvenordale, CT homeowner reached out to Fogarty's Home Services because her pipes had frozen several times. She wanted to resolve this issue so it didn't happen again, and we were happy to help. Besides allowing heat to flow out by conduction, this homeowner's stone walls were letting outside air to leak in, since the home has lower air pressure at the bottom and sucks air in. The sill plate and rim joist above the stone wall were leaking air as well. To fix this very uncomfortable situation, Fogarty's Home Services sprayed the walls, sill plate, and rim joists two-part, expanding, closed cell, polyurethane foam insulation, about 1.5" thick. Because this basement isn't finished, the foam was covered with a white thermal coating. Our customer will notice a DRAMATIC difference in the temperature and comfort of her basement, the floors above it, and her home in general. The results are a much warmer basement, far less drafts, much warmer floors above the basement, a more comfortable home that is easier to heat, and lower energy bills. We Fix Uncomfortable Homes!

Insulating Kneewalls in Putnam, CT

This homeowner in Putnam, CT called us stating that he had a poorly insulated Cape-style home. The home had been built by a family member 70 years ago, and it had multiple problems that the homeowner was working to fix. He wanted to have his insulation replaced to increase the comfort of his home. The second floor of a Cape often suffers from inadequate insulation, and air leaks from the soffits into poorly insulated kneewall spaces. This results in cold drafty rooms in winter that are harder than necessary to heat, and hot rooms in the summer as roof heat radiates in unchecked. Kneewall spaces are dusty and too cold or hot - unsuitable for clean storage.

We had the perfect solution for this customer -- our Super Kneewall™ treatment. First, our SilverGlo™ foam insulation panels are installed on the bottom of the rafters in the kneewall spaces and the ceiling joist bays are blocked and sealed with foam to stop air leakage. Then the roof slopes are dense packed with TruSoft™ cellulose insulation to stop air flow and insulate. Finally, the flat ceiling is insulated with TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. Result - rooms are comfortable all year and need much less heat and air conditioning. Drafts are eliminated as kneewall spaces are airtight and clean and suitable for storage. Summer roof heat is far less.
